About
Financial modelling, explained properly.
FinNerd is a free resource for students and junior analysts who want to understand financial models — not just copy them.
Hi, I'm Maciej
I'm a finance professional and the person behind finnerd.co.uk. I've spent years building financial models — DCFs, LBOs, FP&A decks, trading comps — across FinTech and corporate finance roles.
At some point I started noticing a pattern: most resources on financial modelling either skip straight to Excel shortcuts or drown you in theory with no worked examples. Neither is much use when you're staring at a blank spreadsheet at 11pm trying to build your first DCF.
FinNerd exists to close that gap — practical, plain-English guides that explain why a model is structured a certain way, not just what to type into the cells.
Who this is for
- Students studying finance, accounting, or economics who want to get ahead of the curriculum and build something employers actually recognise.
- Junior analysts (IB, FP&A, PE, corp dev) who need to get up to speed fast without wading through a 500-page textbook.
- Career changers moving into finance who need to build model fluency from scratch.
What you'll find here
The blog covers the full modelling stack — from Free Cash Flow basics through DCF and scenario analysis, all the way to LBO and M&A models. Posts are written in a logical sequence so you can follow them start-to-finish, or dip in wherever you need.
Each guide includes:
- A clear explanation of what the model is and why it's used
- Step-by-step worked examples with real numbers
- Excel structure walkthroughs
- Common mistakes and how to avoid them
